Does Cover Whale offer Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIA) coverage?
UIIA coverage requirements and certification details
Last Updated April 2026
Yes! Cover Whale participates in the Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIA), a program administered by the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA).
Please note, not all policy programs offer UIIA coverages, so it is imperative for the following selections to be disclosed during the quoting process to ensure the required coverages are available and applied.
To request this to be added on the Submission, you will need to ensure the following selections are applied:
-
"UIIA - Intermodal" under the Operations tab of the application
-
"Intermodal Containers" as a commodity under the Cargo tab of the application
-
"Intermodal Cont." selection must also be made on the MCS150 with SAFER/FMCSA.
Currently, our trailer interchange deductible is limited to $2,500 and cannot be adjusted. It is recommended that the policyholder review their equipment provider's (EPs) requirements prior to binding to ensure the policy will meet their needs.
Here's how agents can get certified:
Once the policy or endorsement is bound, an agent can file for certification with IANA at UIIA.org. The agent will require the following:
- Motor Carrier’s Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) – This is four-digit alpha code that is used to identify the Motor Carrier.
- Insurance Agent Code – This code is provided to the Motor Carrier when they join the UIIA and is used by the Motor Carrier to grant insurance agents access to submit insurance on their company’s behalf. For further support, the policyholder may review this helpful video from IANA.
- Form 5C – This is the equipment provider (EP) list from the UIIA. Intermodal truckers are required to list the equipment providers they intend to do business with under the UIIA agreement. Insurance companies require this to know which equipment providers need the additional insured endorsement. Agents can obtain a blank copy of the form under the Submission Files or via this link.
Trailer Interchange Note: If there is both APD and MTC on the Submission, this coverage follows the APD policy by default, so the APD policy details will need to be reported on the certificate.
Questions regarding the online insurance registration process may be directed via e-mail to uiia@intermodal.org or by phone to (877)438-8442.
