What is ICC MC?

ICC MC stands for Interstate Commerce Commission of Motor Carrier, an organization that was responsible for identifying and credentialing freight truckers traveling across state lines, including movers, until 1996. Its primary functions were to ensure fair tariffs and rates were in place, monitor the actions of common carriers, and collect information on long-distance carriers to better serve the transportation industry.

In 1996, the jurisdiction was transferred to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is part of the Department of Transportation. Currently, movers are required to have a DOT number displayed on their vehicles. However, established companies should also have records of their ICC MC numbers. Many companies may still display ICC MC numbers on the cabs and trailers of older fleets, indicating that they were granted permission to perform interstate moves following guidelines related to cargo types, geographical areas, and operational requirements like hours allowed on the road at one time.
